Main Street in Oneonta will be shining bright purple this October! In honor of Domestic Violence awareness month, Main Street will be covered in purple lights and ribbons. Businesses will be asked to decorate their doors and windows with a purple ribbon and information about the program and services.
In October of 1981 the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence sought to create a day of Unity to connect battered women advocates across the nation. It was created to mourn those who have died, celebrate those who have survived, and connect those who work to end violence. In 1987 the awareness day turned into an awareness month.
In addition to Shine the Light on Domestic Violence, Opportunities for Otsego and the Violence intervention Program will be hosting many other events throughout the month.
The Violence Intervention Program provides comprehensive support services to victims of domestic Violence, sexual assault, and violent crimes. The program promotes safe environments, self-determination, self-worth, and envisions a future where people are free from abuse and oppression.
Shine the Light on Domestic Violence was initiated by Governors office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence. It is now a statewide public awareness campaign that sparks discussion about this devastating problem that threatens the safety of too many New Yorkers. Join Subaru, the Oneonta community, and New York State and support Domestic Violence Awareness.
Awareness is the fist step toward real change.
GO PURPLE AND TALK ABOUT IT!
