Consumer reports released its annual 10 Best Vehicle List with its top picks meeting criteria in three areas. In regards to test performance each top pick must rank at or near the top of its class in overall test score. Each top pick must also have an average or better reliability rating which is drawn from the problems CR's subscribers reported on 1.1 million vehicles in a survey. Lastly, top picks must perform adequately on crash tests performed by the government or insurance industry.

The Impreza wins the best compact car category for the fourth year running. Consumer reports notes that both versions (the sedan and hatchback) of the Impreza are "well-rounded packages" with all wheel drive and an affordable price tag. CR is impressed with its fuel economy as an AWD vehicle and contends that its impressive handling makes it an "absorbent ride." With a simple and roomy interior, spacious back seat, and generous visibility, the Impreza makes it a comfortable ride for all.

The redesigned 2014 Subaru Forester topped the best small SUV category. The Forester also won Motor Trend's SUV of the year. The "space-efficient" design with new large windows and doors gives it the best visibility in its category. It is spacious for passengers with ample room in the back seats and comfortable for the driver with excellent driving position. CR was most impressed with its class leading fuel economy of 26 mpg overall and a whopping 35 on the highway.
